Swallowtails

When we set off for The Broads it was an overcast grey sky with light rain. The Swallowtail and Norfolk Hawker Day was looking decidedly dicey.

Even though when we arrived on site the heat of the sun was breaking through, an imposing flagon of a cloud soon poured out its contents in what can only be described as a deluge. We persisted.

Between large dark clouds the sun eventually shone and insects began to appear. A Southern Hawker was first to break cover and then another deluge began … not of rain this time, but of Swallowtails. First one, then two and three and more. I have never seen so many in one spot previously.

The weather improved during the afternoon and it was the Norfolk Hawkers turn to put on a display.

A day enjoyed by all.
