Holding ground

All the warblers locally have now taken up territories and started to breed in earnest. This local Whitethroat has been particularly vociferous over the last few weeks in defending his territory.

Aren’t youngsters lazy?

.

As we were walking along a hedgerow the other day; judging by the commotion coming from ahead of us it was obvious a family party were being fed. A group of fledged Whitethroats were begging from their parents. As we approached they moved on. One youngster however remained behind. I don’t think he recognised the fact he was supposed to follow. However, he eventually got the message that if he didn’t catch up he wouldn’t get fed.

Scratchy Residents

A Whitethroat and his intended have taken up residence aside a pair of Lesser Whitethroats at Falcon Cottage this spring. Each male takes it in turn to scratch out a tune from the top of the hawthorns.
