Breaking Cover

Sat in the hide last week as we looked out over the marshes this little fella broke cover. He came out of his hidi-hole and stepped into the sunshine for a bit of a preen; and who can blame him. Some good weather over the last few weeks here in Norfolk. However, experience tells me we’ll pay for it in the long run.

Colour on a grey day

A small group of Waxwings gave a bit of colour on a grey day last week. Back-lit as they were they never gave wonderful photographic oppertunities but my word they are beautiful creatures.

Common Colours

Common Seals come in all sorts of colours. These two were on the beach among a whole host of Grey Seals the other week. One was what I would call normal the other was quite orange. It’s often thought the orange individuals originate from the Thames Estuary where there is a high proportion of these individuals. The colour is thought to be derived from iron staining.

The orange animal seemed to be covered in a larger than normal share of flies so I checked him over as best I could just to see if he had any injuries that might be attracting them. He seemed to be free of any sores or cuts. Maybe it was his brighter attire the flies preferred.

Comma

This Comma Butterfly was perched up asking to be photographed on a tour last week. It was showing us exactly how it came to get its name!

Bronze serpent

A chance encounter with a slow worm on a couple of tours the other day was appreciated by all concerned. This legless lizard although harmless is quite beautiful. A bronze serpent.

All curled up

Sitting on a blackberry bush was this White Admiral. I couldn’t resist taking a shot of his curly little tongue and spotty eyes!

Bog Orchid

Almost imperceptible. Completely hidden. In the words of others; ‘If you didn’t know it was there, you wouldn’t see it’.

Bog Orchid is a rare small plant just a few centimetres tall found amid boggy ground. Seeing it is always difficult. Getting near enough to photograph it is a wet feet and knees job.
