Making a meal of it!

There’s been a few, two maybe three or even four, Mealy Redpolls in among a finch flock at Weybourne this winter. We spent a little time photographing them the other day. Mostly they were distant but eventually after a mornings wait this one came and posed like a professional!

Mealy mouthed

Hiding in a corner out of the wind the other week was this Mealy Redpoll. Tired, wet and hungry after his journey south he fed on small seeds from a dock to recoup a little energy before no doubt flying on to the south.

Beacon

Redpolls are a confusing family and it takes practice to go through a flock of Lesser Redpolls and eliminate any Mealys. The range in plumage of each can sometimes overlap. However a Coues’ Arctic Redpoll that has spent much of this winter at Kelling here on the coast was not too difficult as it stood out like a beacon in yesterday’s winter gloom. Another photograph is on the ‘Wildcatch Photography’ site in the ‘Latest Section’
