When we visit Scotland in April we do so because that is the optimum time to see a range of species. Some species are easier to see than others at this time. Crested Tits are quite hard as many birds are ‘sitting on eggs’.
When we visited Scotland last week Tania and I found these endearing little ‘cresties’ at each site we visited. Much commoner and easier to see than in April!
On our way to Scotland for the New Year we called in at the Northumberland coast. Scanning the sea was a local. It wasn’t long before we struck up a conversation with him. He made the comment about us celebrating Hogmanay in Scotland; stating “They know how to do it!”.
He was right. However, it wasn’t all about Whisky, Haggis and fireworks. Amid the dark canopy of the Scots Pines in Abernethy there were a few of this helmeted little chaps about. I never tire of watching Crested Tits.
A great group in Scotland last weekend on the Scottish Birders Weekend. We saw some good birds including this Crested Tit in Abernethy forest. Next year the itinerary has been changed slightly to incorporate an additional day at the coast for some passage migrants and late winter visitors such as White billed Diver and King Eider. Great hotel, great food, great birds … what more could you ask? Here’s the itinerary.

Arrived back last night from the Scottish Birders long weekend. Excellent tally of 103 species including PTARMIGAN, CAPERCAILLE, BLACK & RED GROUSE, BLACK & RED THROATED DIVERS, SLAVONIAN GREBES, CRESTED TITS, SCOTTISH CROSSBILLS …. and so much more, despite some intimidating weather.
