Winging-it

It’s always confounded me why Black Terns don’t breed here on the Norfolk Broads. I mean it’s not as though there’s no suitable habitat and they breed as close as Holland some 125 miles away. They have bred in the past as recently as 1975 and indeed they were once a common breeder here. Another of the marsh terns White-winged Black Tern can even make it here although it’s more of a southerly and easterly breeder and has never bred here despite some spring visiting flocks in the past.

It was nice to see this White-winged Black Tern today on the broads showing the distinctive dark ‘saddle’. Always distant it showed classic marsh tern habits as it dipped towards the waters surface to pick off insects.
