Magic

As we sat between mountains among the melee of Red Kites on our Welsh Tour an old friend came to visit us. Like a spectre emerging from the masses the White Kite made an entrance; bold and brash this bird. Quite at ease among his Red brethren he came to feed as confidently as the others. A genetic disorder, leucism, pales the birds plumage giving it a magical appearance. A magical bird in a magical setting.

Great! We have many Red Kites here, but I never saw an abnormally colored one. The bird on your picture is marked at both wings, did you see it? Is it possible that it escaped from captivity anywhere?

Hi Thomas – many of the kites we saw during the weekend were tagged in this way. In Wales the Red Kite almost became extinct last century and its recovery is closely monitored hence the tags on the kites. The White Kite is wild but was tagged as a nestling.
